Velma was born in Eastland Texas, mother Mary Ann Clifton, father Neadom Laury Clifton. Velma moved to McClain County Oklahoma when she was 2 years old by covered wagon. It took a month to make the trip. She was too young to remember much about that part of her life. Growing up in rural Oklahoma was pretty tough. The never-ending work was hard and the only entertainment were the pranks created by her 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Even though she was the baby of the family she did not let anyone get by with calling her a baby. I guess that was partly what set the pattern for her entire life. She did not back down no matter what kind of curve anyone tried to throw her way. She would always stand her ground and fight for those that she loved and for what she thought was right. In 1938 she met and married her first husband and 11 months later on her 19th birthday she gave birth to the only child she would ever have. She not only shared her birthday with her new born daughter she also shared her name, Velma Dolores. She was a very devoted mother and showered her daughter with love, kindness and friendship. When she became a grandmother she gave her 3 grandchildren the same kind of love. In 1954 she met and married her second husband. He passed away 3 months before she did. She loved him until the day she died and I’m sure they are together again as they should be. She was and still is a very powerful force in the lives of all who were blessed enough to know her and to have shared a part of their life with her.
